This study examines global sugar consumption patterns from 2014 to 2023, analysing trends across eight major regions through both national and per capita consumption metrics. Drawing on comprehensive data from the ISO Sugar Yearbook 2024, the analysis reveals a market characterized by increasing regional divergence, with global consumption reaching 177.8 mln tonnes in 2023, representing a 7.9% increase over the decade.
Chapter 1 establishes the methodological framework by defining sugar consumption and measurement approaches, while Chapter 2 analyses key consumption drivers, including demographic trends, income levels, pricing dynamics, and cultural factors, including emerging health consciousness considerations. Chapter 3 provides a comprehensive global overview of consumption trends, followed by Chapter 4's detailed regional analyses spanning Western Europe (-1.78% Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)), the Indian Subcontinent (2.24% CAGR), Africa (2.69% CAGR), and five other major regions. The final chapter synthesizes these findings to present future market implications and challenges, highlighting the need for significant infrastructure development to support projected consumption growth of 13.6 to 15.5 mln tonnes by 2035.
The research demonstrates that while emerging markets show robust growth potential, developed markets experience continuing declines, a pattern accelerated rather than fundamentally altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study concludes that future market growth will increasingly depend on emerging economies' consumption potential, particularly in the Indian Subcontinent and Africa, though realizing this will encounter significant infrastructure and supply chain challenges. These findings have important implications for industry stakeholders in planning future production and distribution strategies within an increasingly complex and regionally diverse market environment.
