Global Sugar Market Highlights – 2024

The world sugar economy returned a small deficit in 2024, world output falling short of global use by0.337 mln tonnes.

World production during 2024 reached 180.405 mln tonnes, up 1.5% on the revised 2023 total of 177.762mln tonnes.  Figures for earlier years are unchanged. This season’s output is the first to vault the 180 mln tonne level and finally exceeds the 2018 total.

Global consumption in 2024was finalised at 180.742 mln tonnes, up from 177.705 mln tonnes in 2023. While there were substantial variances in figures reported by members, the 1.71% rise points to underlying consumption strength and a six year high in per capita consumption of 22.3kg.

World market prices for both raw and white sugar fell during 2024. In terms of the annual averages, the ISA daily price slipped 13.3% to USD20.32 cents/lb.
